The Brown bugger’s down, but…

David Davis

This is a rather threatening small cloud on the horizon.

  • I stopped reading at the point where Heffer made the laughable claim that our system of governance has checks and balances. Whatever merit his consistent slagging off of the NuCons has, he’ll always be crippled by the fantasy world he lives in. On the other hand, the American system has checks and balances; to achieve that, they pointedly disregarded the parliamentary dictatorship system they had overthrown by rebellion when choosing their own.

  • Didn’t take long for them to get started, did it? But I thought the first move would have come from the cons, not the illiberal undemocrats. Not that it particularly matters, as they are only continuing Labour’s legacy. Funny to see Jack Straw and David Blunkett piping up on this one – the only objection those two will have is that the measure isn’t being introduced by and for themselves.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

Nope. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Constitutional changes, which are theoretically universal in character, should not be made for particular reasons like keeping a coalition together. Not that there’s anything but rubber bands and spit holding the British constitution together at this point.
